SPARKING SOLUTIONS: countywide strategic planning process

Plan - dec 29Paving a path in the business world takes perseverance, inspiration, knowledge, effective communication, and leadership abilities. In addition to all the talents that an individual needs, the community needs to be just as prepared. So starts our strategic planning process!

It started with the Getting to Yes workshop with the purpose of helping Mason County support and grow entrepreneurship and build a a viable economic ecosystem. Participants from all areas of Mason County energized this event as we asked what they want to accomplish with economic development. This built a common understanding of how local economies work, clarifying the roles of the various players in the local economy, and increasing collaboration between the various players. At the end of the workshop the participants utilized SWOT analysis to understand the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in the local economy, the results of which will appear later in this paper. The outcomes from this event encouraged the EDC’s board and staff to build off of the momentum and develop a strategic plan for countywide economic development. This plan reflects the voices and perspectives of our community; it also responds to our observations of needs and opportunities across Mason County and trends in economic development across the nation. This plan will provide a basis on which organizations make decisions about how to improve and navigate a path to a better future.

And we are not finished yet, work continues on the seven identified industries: tourism, value-added agriculture, advanced manufacturing, career and technical education, information and communications technology, forest products, and healthcare. Keep checking back for more updates. Click Sparking Solutions – draft to see the first step.
