EDC DECLARES SUPPORT FOR ADAGE BIOMASS FACILITY
Shelton, Washington: The Economic Development Council of Mason County announces its
support for $250 million biomass facility that is proposed by ADAGE. This company is a
partnership between Duke Energy and AREVA to site a $250 million biomass energy generating
plant near Shelton. This project will bring 400 jobs over the course of 2.5 year construction
timeline, 24 permanent jobs at the facility, over 100 jobs created directly supplying the facility,
and $2.4 million in tax contributions annually to State and local government.
“This is the type of project that we want to see in Mason County. It provides jobs, tax base in
our community, and new industry related to diversified forest products” said Matt Matayoshi,
Executive Director. He went on to explain that “This project is consistent with Washington
energy and environmental policy,” added Matayoshi.
The Washington State legislature has added biomass as a “Green” industry supporting the
language in the renewable energy initiative stating that biomass is a renewable and green
source of energy production. This puts biomass in the same category as wind or solar. In a
region that has a history of utilizing wood waste for biofuels before statehood, this facility
continues that sustainable tradition.
The EDC is interested and engaged in the proposal by ADAGE, a partnership of Duke Energy and
AREVA. EDC will be collaborating with ADAGE as they work with the community and move
through the permitting process. Matt Matayoshi added: “As an organization we are confident
that questions about this project will be answered clearly as the process develops.”
